These periodical cicadas are a genus known as the Magicicada, which live underground for most of their lives and only emerge every 13 or 17 years.
Geographic Distribution
Brood XIX cicadas inhabit a larger geographic area compared to Brood XIII. They are expected to emerge in Illinois, Missouri, and other states within the eastern US. Brood XIII, on the other hand, is primarily concentrated in Illinois.
